COURSE GOAL

To provide practical, up-to-date information that will prepare students for working in the office—focuses on attitudes and human relationships, emphasizing that office success depends on “people skills” as much as on functional skills.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a two-semester course focusing on management and supervision in the office environment. The course covers skills such as word processing, records management, and communications as well as decision-making, critical thinking, teamwork, and ethics.  OM will provide practical, up-to-date information and experiences that will prepare students for the office environment.  Emphasis is on practical applications—everyday skills and knowledge needed to be successful.

Text:  Office Skills.  Third Edition, 2003.  Charles Barrett, Grady Kimbrell, and Pattie Odgers, Ed.D.

Handouts:  Teacher-made, book made, and student-shared

Supplies:  3-ring binder (1”) with dividers, loose leaf paper, highlighters, pocket dictionary, and black ink or pencil

 

Teaching Methods:

Lecture/Discussions – class will be used to highlight the important material in the text through class discussion, group work, handouts, presentations, and demonstrations.  Students are asked to actively participate in discussions—called upon often for practice in communication and interpersonal skills; and produce accurate, meaningful, and attractive hardcopies of SCANS assignments.
